Two Readership Surveys Put Local and National Spotlight on Dierbergs

St. Louis - In a national readers’ survey released in June by a leading consumer research organization, St. Louis-based Dierbergs Markets was among the nation’s top grocers for customers’ overall satisfaction with their shopping experiences. Dierbergs earned high marks for its perishable departments, customer-service practices and store cleanliness.

The national survey, conducted among readers of the consumer organization’s monthly magazine, is a reflection of visits to supermarkets, supercenters and warehouse clubs. Highlights specific to Dierbergs included high recognition in categories such as quantity of local produce, produce variety and quality, store-prepared foods, and store cleanliness.

“Those are strong areas of focus for our company, so it’s satisfying to see that those efforts are recognized by our customers and contribute to their shopping experiences,” said Greg Dierberg, president and fourth-generation grocer of the 25-store supermarket chain.

“We are particularly proud of the recognition received in the local produce category,” Dierberg added. “The word ‘local’ is trendy in retailing, and while many food sellers tout local, it’s truly difficult to do it well. Our partnerships with most of our local farmers span decades, so it’s not a reaction to trend. It’s a commitment by us and our farmers to offer customers a robust local produce program that grows every year.”

Separately, readers of Sauce Magazine, a St. Louis publication focused on dining, home-cooking, and the local entertainment scene, voted Dierbergs St. Louis’ Favorite Grocery Store for the fifth year in a row. The results were published in Sauce’s June 2017 issue.

The local recognition in Sauce is important to Dierberg. “This is an extremely competitive market, particularly for a traditional, family owned grocer. We try our very best to give our customers the best shopping experiences possible. Sauce’s poll is a barometer for how we’re doing and motivates us to continue to improve.”

Dierbergs Markets traces its roots to a country store founded in 1854 in West St. Louis County. Four generations have managed the company, which had only one location until 1967. Today, Dierbergs employs 4,100 Associates in 24 St. Louis metropolitan-area stores and a location at Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks.
