Dierbergs Des Peres Announces Wellness Team

Plans to Expand Decades-Long Wellness Programs

For Immediate Release: July 27, 2012

Dierbergs Markets is expanding its company-wide wellness initiatives with the creation of a wellness team operating from the Culinary Event Center in its new Des Peres store.

Staff nutritionist Trish Farano, a 14-year veteran of Dierbergs, re-located to the Culinary Event Center. She will be joined by Registered Dietitian Jenn Randazzo, who comes to Dierbergs and the wellness team with a strong culinary skillset and extensive background as a pediatric and family-based consulting dietician. Gloris Xynos, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator from St. Luke’s Hospital, rounds out the wellness team. St. Luke’s operates a Convenient Care Clinic in the Dierbergs Des Peres store.

The goal of the Wellness Team is to provide Dierbergs’ customers and their families access to wholesome foods, easy-to-understand nutrition information, and expert advice on how to make healthy lifestyle changes that are sustainable and enjoyable. From customized grocery store tours to online social media, the Dierbergs Wellness Team plans to engage their current and future customers in ways unlike ever before.

“Wellness has been part of the Dierbergs store experience for nearly 30 years, from heart-health education to company-wide initiatives focused on childhood obesity,” Farano said. “The new Culinary Event Center was designed to give us the space, tools and platform to build on those programs.”

Events planned by the Wellness Team are centered on the goal of answering the following questions: “What’s on your plate?”, “What’s on your mind?” and “What’s in your cart?” Some upcoming opportunities include:

What’s on Your Mind?

  • Live Twitter Chats: These chats will take place the first Wednesday of every month from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. with dietitian-led healthy eating and lifestyle discussion. Begins Wed., Sept. 5.
What’s in Your Cart?
  • Complimentary Scheduled Store Tours: These tours focus on specific dietary interests. Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays for groups of 20 to 30 people. Customers can call Trish or Jenn to reserve a date at 314-238-0440.
What’s on Your Plate?
  • A Rustic Italian Dinner: This cooking class features lightened-up versions of Italian classics. Wed., Aug. 22 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. $25 class fee. Des Peres Culinary Event Center. Register online.
  • Gluten-Free Comfort Food Feast: A gluten-free cooking class presented by St. Louis-native and restaurateur Chef Eric Brenner (Chez Leon, Moxy), now Chief Culinary Officer of Bold Organics in New York. Sat., Aug. 25 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. $29 class fee. Des Peres Culinary Event Center. Register online.
The Wellness Team at Dierbergs Des Peres will promote storewide initiatives to inspire healthy lifestyle choices. The program works in tandem with Dierbergs Pharmacy, St. Luke’s Convenient Care Clinic, Dierbergs Whole Life Department and Dierbergs Culinary Event Center.

“We fully expect our Des Peres store to become a destination for wellness activities—to reach beyond the immediate customer base served by this new location,” Farano said. “Plus, programs will flow outward from our Des Peres wellness team to existing locations to complement and build on wellness programs we already have in place.”

Dierbergs’ heart-healthy eating initiatives and cooking classes, many established through its long-standing partnership with Missouri Baptist Medical Center, started in 1986. Other offerings and initiatives include Carb It Smart cooking classes; a quarterly Whole Life Magazine publication; and numerous published healthy eating recipes including two Healthy cookbooks.

Dierbergs’ Kids BEE Healthy, a four-week, fall campaign initiated in 2007, tackles childhood obesity with programs and activities focused on healthy eating and active lifestyles. In 2012, Dierbergs teamed with Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center in support of Homers for Health, a fund-raising and educational effort for the hospital’s wellness programs. A component of that program includes Dierbergs Strong Bodies, weekly healthy eating tips aired on the Cardinals Kids show on Fox Sports Midwest.

The company introduced its first Whole Life Natural and Organic departments when it opened its Brentwood Pointe store in 2001. Most Dierbergs locations now have those dedicated departments; all stores carry more than 150 fresh organic produce items alongside traditional offerings. Each Dierbergs carries an ever-growing list of gluten-free, sugar-free and other items for individuals with specific dietary needs.
