ST. LOUIS, MO. – January 23, 2023 – Roger Dierberg, former executive for Dierbergs Markets, died Wednesday, January 18th in St. Louis, Missouri at 88.

Roger graduated with an engineering degree from Purdue University, and earned his MBA from Washington University. Later in life, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus by the Washington University Olin School of Business.

Roger was a third-generation grocer and former EVP of Dierbergs Markets. He joined the company in 1969 after a successful tenure at McDonnell Aircraft, and went on to help make Dierbergs the company it is today. As a cousin and business partner to Bob Dierberg, he made a large impact as the company grew from two stores to 20 stores during his tenure.

“We always checked in with each other on important business decisions. That’s why we had such a successful business relationship,” said Bob Dierberg, Chairman of Dierbergs Markets. “It was a mutual relationship of respect for each other’s opinions.”

Beyond the walls of Dierbergs, Roger took on increasingly more leadership responsibility and influence at the State and National levels for the grocery industry, eventually becoming one of the founding executive committee members and first National Grocers Association Chairman in 1983. In 1995, Roger was recognized as the Missouri Grocers Association (MGA) Grocer of the Year. Dan Shaul, Executive State Director for Missouri Grocers Association shared “The Missouri Grocers Association would not be where it is today without the leadership and passion for the industry of Roger Dierberg.”

Roger’s passion for service and addressing food insecurity led to a launch and long-standing partnership between Dierbergs and Operation Food Search, here in St. Louis. He also led philantropic efforts for FICAH (Food Industry Crusade Against Hunger) until his retirement in 2004.

The service will be held Monday, January 23, at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Chesterfield, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to The Lutheran High School Association, Lutheran Family and Children’s Services or to the charity of your choice.
